While I was in Oregon for Kara Russel's wedding, I spent an evening at
her parents' home. Kory and his fiance were also there, and the morning
Benji and I were supposed to leave, I heard some strange
electronic-sounding music coming from the bathroom while Kory was
taking a shower. It didn't take me long to ask and find out that it was
The Postal Service. Benji and I swung by a music store that day, but I
decided not to buy the album, Give Up, despite the fact that my ears
were really craving some new tunes. After I returned home, I grabbed a
copy and had a good long listen.
I love this band! Ben Gibbard,
the lead singer (who is also the front man for
Death Cab for Cutie, by
the way), has a strangely serene, almost amelodic voice. It sort of
reminds me of
Cake's vocals, in a way, but a little more smooth and
varied. My favorites on the disc are The District Sleeps Alone Tonight and Recycled Air, but they're all great. I like the lyrics and the uniqueness of the electronic sound. It sort of reminds me of a slightly more refined
Self in some ways (though Self is probably more of a genius).
Anyway, I have been listening to the CD, especially The District Sleeps Alone Tonight, almost constantly this past month. It's relaxing to me, but strangely energetic at the same time. The music itself is difficult to describe, but sounds slightly Moby-esque, with bits of Self thrown in. Yeah, I'm grasping for good descriptions now, I know. Tell you what - if you haven't heard it yet, give it a listen. I think you'll be surprised.
