At some point a long time ago, I went through and added a bunch of Academy Award winning films to my Netflix queue. That's how this one ended up in my mailbox over Thanksgiving weekend. To be perfectly honest, I was disappointed. The story way it particularly interesting, and the acting, while good, did not seen to be Oscar-caliber. Maybe the pickings were slim that year.
Anyway, Maclaine's character was super-annoying so I guess it was a great performance. Nicholson was also good, but again, I was disappointed, especially after seeing him in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, or more recently in The Departed. He is just a much better actor than this film indicated.
The most surprising thing to me about the film was its PG rating. There was at least one use of the word "fuck," and many of the conversations were about sex. There was even a scene where a woman talks about her husband making her wet, plus numerous other sexual innuendo. I wouldn't say it deserved an "R" rating, but PG seemed incorrect as well.
This one was a disappointment.
