Children of Men

I went to see this last night with Ben, Satish, Benoit, and Lincoln. George recommended it to me this past week. It was already on my list, but his recommendation pushed me into the theater rather than waiting for Netflix.
It was good. The sci-fi elements were very subtle; the politics, less so. Excellent cinematography, not a lot of quick cuts. Longer shots and some "war-cam" like stuff where the camera jerked and wobbled a lot and the explosions seemed to happen right next to the camera. There was distinct lack of color in the film; everything was very grey and lifeless. I didn’t notice any child actors either… What was up with that? :-)
Anyway, I enjoyed it, though I felt the ending was slightly abrupt. I’m not sure how I would have wanted it to end though. I really liked how it didn’t have any narration or intro text to explain the back-story, but rather introduced you to the state of the world through news events, in-film propaganda, and dialogue.
It was interesting that as people realized that the human race was dying, life became less precious in some ways. In an economic sense, constrained supply of a good typically makes it more valuable. In this case, where there was no real hope of survival, people began to think and act more selfishly, allying themselves with smaller groups rather than thinking and acting in the best interest of the race as a whole. Much more tribal.
